Standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon 35 years ago was one of the most dramatic experiences of my life. Revisiting this summer, I was stunned and confused with the view, until I read a sign posted right at the rim about air pollution. Air pollution at this natural wonder far from cities and industry! In summer, the pollutants blow in from far away places like California, southern Arizona, and northern New Mexico. On a clear day, you can see the San Francisco Peaks boldy against the sky. This day was not such a day.

My husband was a mule guide and packer at the Grand Canyon for 10 years back in the late 50's and 60's before the pollution crept into the Canyon. Flying back to Los Angeles one day, we passed over what I thought was a huge brown field being plowed by a lone tractor; but a closer look showed me that it was instead a boat in the middle of Big Bear lake. My family moved from Southern California when it hurt to breathe and we found ourselves closing the windows to keep out the air. Now we live in Colorado at 6000 feet where we're above the pollution, but still it keeps coming. I think it's quite tragic. I'm glad you were able to see the Canyon in all its splendour many years ago
